From a fan of snowboarding's perspective, Double Pipe is rad. From a content point of view (photos and videos), it's a dream. But how is it from an athlete's perspective?
We caught up with Louie Vito, who will compete this weekend, to get his thoughts on how Red Bull Double Pipe will play out.
Red Bull Snow: What were your first thoughts when you heard Red Bull was putting two Superpipes side-by-side?
Louie Vito: I thought it sounded like a cool idea and that it was something different and unique. I've talked to SPT about it for a little bit and to see everything come together and watch it actually materialize is exciting. For me, I just think something fun and unique is always a good idea regardless.
Red Bull Snow: First impressions after seeing the renderings?
Louie Vito: It looks sick! I'm interested in seeing how it all works out and if it works out the way I envision it. I think there will be some kinks that the riders and builders may have to work out but that’s part of the process and it’s definitely fun for me to be involved.
Red Bull Snow: Looking at the animation video, how do you think the riders are going to best utilize the pipes?
Louie Vito: I think the best way to utilize the pipes will be to try as many different lines as possible. Mixing it up, transferring from pipe to pipe, and hitting the features smoothly are all a part of my thought process.
Red Bull Snow: How do you approach a feature such as Double Pipe, something that hasn't been done before to this magnitude?
Louie Vito: You can't really go in there with too much of a game plan because you don't know how it will pan out until you are out there actually riding. I see features I like and have trick ideas, but you never know how it will work until you actually take runs through it.
Red Bull Snow: Do you have any particular lines in mind based off of the renderings?
Louie Vito: Oh yeah. But mostly I have tricks I want to do on certain features and I am just hoping I can put it all together.
Red Bull Snow: Is there anything in those renderings that's intimidating right off the bat?
Louie Vito: I always get a little nervous sending it off a hip with a quarterpipe landing. You have to be so precise on the landing.
Red Bull Snow: What do you think Double Pipe will do to highlight snowboarding?
Louie Vito: Give the viewers a combination of different aspects of snowboarding in one event. It will also be more fun for both the riders and the fans because it's so unique and riders are truly going to be building off each other.
Red Bull Snow: What are you looking forward to most during Double Pipe weekend?
Louie Vito: Riding with my friends, enjoying the hopefully nice weather, and most of all, enjoying a really a fun event.
Red Bull Snow: Your birthday is on March 20, which is during Double Pipe. Do you have any celebration plans brewing for Aspen?
Louie Vito: I’m planning on just going out with everyone. To me, it's another day in the year but it makes it a lot more fun when everyone is around having a good time. Aspen is such a cool town that no matter what, fun will be had!
